human metabolism process
Is thyroid gland an intelligent design by the designer?

The ductless gland found on both sides of the windpipe secretes the hormone…thyroxine, a compound of iodine and thyrosine, which controls the rate of metabolism in the human body affecting its growth and activity. Lack of thyroxine causes slow development of the body and brain and if it is in excess, causes excitability….Now think….can it be evolved by natural processes…or it is an intelligent design by the designer?

>”Now think….can it be evolved by natural processes…or it is an intelligent design by the designer?”

That’s an easy one … it can evolve by natural processes.

[And Izzy is exactly right ... if the thyroid gland was a product of intelligent designer, then that designer wasn't very good. From hyperthyroidism to hypothyroidism, goiter, iodine deficiency, Grave's disease, etc. etc. the thyroid gland is a center for design flaws. Evolution is a better explanation because the process itself *IS* trial and error, rather than "deliberate design."]

It is not an argument to say “Wow, this thing (flagellum, eye, blood clotting, thyroid regulation, phagocytosis) is really complicated to understand. So it *must* be the *deliberate* design of something more intelligent than I am.” That is just a copout argument … an “argument from incredulity.”

In short, it is an effective argument on 10th graders at the very moment they’re struggling to memorize their Kreb’s cycle. (“Man, this stuff is complex! Maybe those ID people are right!”) But it is an argument that fails collossally to persuade scientists, who see a complex problem, and dive in. That’s precisely why the ID advocates, unable to convince scientists, are turning to 10th graders and Bible-belt moviegoers.

Feedback loops are *everywhere* in nature. From the female reproductive cycle, to insulin-sugar feedback, to the regulation testosterone by the SRY gene during fetal development, to the way bees change the food fed to a larva to make it female when they need a new queen. They start as simple feedback mechanisms of two proteins that inversely affect each other (when one goes up, the other goes down), and get more and more complex over time.

This is precisely why Intelligent Design is the exact *opposite* to how science is done. Intelligent Design is not about finding new answers, but exactly the opposite … it is the quest for the question we *cannot answer*. It is the quest for *surrender*, the “stumper” question.

That is why all arguments for Intelligent Design are phrased in terms of “stumpers” for evolution. (And they fail. Every single time.)

In short, Intelligent Design is the quest for ignorance (as in “we don’t know, and never will.”)
